Cleaned up the corrosion, sprayed everything down including connectors with electric connector cleaner spray and bingo it all worked. It'll look goofy, but if the problem is that something is hung up, not engaging, this will encourage a mismatch between front and rear driveline speed, and make it more likely for the components to mesh.
