My step mom recently gave me this gun, that her father owned. I was under the impression that it was purchased in the 1930's, but now I think I may have misunderstood.

In searching another rimfire forum I think the answer is for rifles made after 2000 the first two digits of the serial number are subtracted from 2100 to fine the date, making my rifle a 2003 manufacture (last year made). For some odd reason, the Marlin Camp 9 and Camp 45 have a different way of deciphering the date of manufacture as opposed to all other methods for concerning lever and bolt action Marlins.
